R+D+i project to design asphalt mixtures with glass.

As is the case with the ash project, the aim of this project is to achieve a decrease in the problem and of the resources destined to the management and treatment of household and industrial waste. However, in this case, the amount of this specific waste is much more significant, as it comes from both the industry and households. Nevertheless, the re-usage methods are much more developed and implemented than in the case of ash/slag, which does not mean that there is no place for the development of new, alternative solutions.

In summary, the practical application consists of replacing a significant amount of large aggregates, sand or fine aggregates with ground glass during the manufacturing of asphalt mixtures.

The cost-effectiveness analysis of this technique includes the comparison of such factors as price, quality, transportation, among others of traditional materials and recycled glass. Likewise, the composition and characteristics of glass could supply the mixture with a series of additional advantages, such as quick drying or greater reflectivity, although there are other inconveniences that will have to be solved (for example, using a compound or additional additive to supplement the lack of aggregate-asphalt adherence).
